What fits on a headstone
- Upright headstone, 42 × 13 in: 4 lines × 15 [1]60
- Flat granite, marble or bronze, 24 × 12 in: 2 × 27 [1]54

Layout
The inscription formula by stone type

Formula: name as they were known + dates + relationship line (“Beloved mother and friend”) + an epitaph of about 30 characters per line or less + an optional emblem.
Rules
Check the cemetery rules first
- Cemeteries can reject a memorial that is unsuitable “on account of size, design, or inscription” [3].
- Some sections allow only flat bronze markers set flush with the grass [5].
- Rules often list what's allowed: names or nicknames, dates, emblems, and quotations from published books, poetry or religious texts [3].
- The FTC advises asking which monuments or memorials a cemetery allows before you buy [6].
Questions to ask the cemetery office:
- Are upright monuments allowed in this section, or flush markers only?
- What sizes and materials are allowed?
- Are emblems, photos or non-English scripts allowed?
- Is a QR plaque allowed?
- Do you need to approve the design before it's ordered?
- What is the setting or foundation fee?

VA markers
Veteran headstones and markers
The VA provides headstones and markers for eligible veterans, and its inscription rules are strict and clear [1],[2].
- Required: legal name, branch of service, year of birth and year of death [2].
- Allowed as additional text: terms of endearment and nicknames, such as “OUR BELOVED POPPY” [2].
- Not allowed: pictures or graphics, other than approved emblems of belief [2].
- Spouse: details go on the back of an upright headstone [1].
- Apply with VA Form 40-1330, which lists every marker size and limit [1].
Final check
Proofing before carving
A mistake in stone is expensive to fix. Before you approve the order:
- Confirm spellings and dates in writing with two people.
- Approve a full-size or scaled layout proof, and keep a signed copy.
- Get the cemetery's approval if it's required [3].
- Leave space for future names and dates on a companion stone.
- Check any quotation's attribution and copyright.
